The umbilical cord extends from the belly button in the fetus to the placenta. While in the womb, the umbilical cord becomes a link between the fetus and mother to carry the supply of oxygen and nutrients from the placenta to the baby's bloodstream. Another condition that has a bad impact is if the coil makes the fetal heart rate slow down instantly. This happens because the umbilical cord can be stretched and compressed during childbirth, thereby reducing the flow of blood that goes to or is taken out of the baby's body.
An umbilical cord with other problems, for example a fetus swallowing meconium or its first stool, is also a dangerous condition. Inhaling meconium can make it difficult for the fetus to breathe because its respiratory tract is blocked and irritated by feces.
